What is Solar Power?
The easiest way to understand SOLAR POWER is by breaking it down into the two individual words....SOLAR "means pertaining to the Sun" (relating to the sun, the sun rays.) POWER (from the science perspective) is "the amount of work done or the amount of 'energy' transferred per unit of time". The light from the sun produces solar energy. It is the light that causes the electricity. So then, "SOLAR POWER" is the result of converting Sunlight into electricity.
Direct Solar Power

Sunlight can be converted directly into power by using Photovoltaic (PV) (or Solar Cells). Solar Panels are a series of solar cells, which are converted into electricity.
Indirect Solar Power
Another way power is collected is indirectly. This process is called CSP or "Concentrating Solar Power". It uses mirrors or lenses and tracking systems to focus a large area of sun's rays into a small beam. This small beam is concentrated onto photovoltaic surfaces...or used as a heat source for power plants.
Below is a diagram of How Concentrating Solar Power Works.

Other ways we see Solar at work is when our garden lights 'light up' at night, or on the highways and interstates, often in remote areas where construction sign, for example, are lite up at night.
