how Solar Power Works

When you hear the phrase “solar power” you probably think of solar cells creating electricity when the sun hits them, which is definitely one of the main forms of solar power...but there is actually quite a large list of forms of solar power and/or ways to use 'solar energy'.

Here are Facts about Solar Energy

  • Solar Cells, by the way, are technically called photovoltaics , or (PV) for short. Groups of solar cells make up solar panels/modules. The 3 common solar panels manufactured today are 1) Monocrystalline Solar Panel and
    2) Polycrystalline Solar Panels, and 3) Amorphous Solar Panels. (Just Click "ON" the type you want to view now.)

  • Passive Solar makes use of the heat of the sun by absorbing it then releasing it gradually to provide warmth to an area.

    solar hot water
  • Solar Hot Water systems use solar collectors to concentrate the suns energy on the water to be heated and then stores the hot water for later use.
  • Daylighting is a technique used to direct the sun's abundant light into buildings by either the proper positioning of windows or by the use of light channeling duct-work that is reflective on the inside. This effectively reduces the need for artificial lighting.

  • Concentrating Solar Power plants are being refined and built. They take solar hot water to its limits by intensely focusing the sun's energy to eventually create enough steam to run turbines that produce electricity.
  • There are Solar process techniques that are not usually used "residentially" but can be very efficient when used in commercial buildings, such as Ventilation Air Preheating, Vacuum-Tube Collector and Linear Concentrator Water Heating, and Thermally Activated Cooling (TACS) Systems.

  • The availability of solar powered products is growing by leaps and bounds whether it be because of rising fuel prices causing the social mindset to want to find other alternate energy sources, or the ever changing political battle in the U.S. and Globally to promote concerns over "global Warming"(whether they be legitimate or not is a topic we'll cover on another page....if you want, you can click here or on the navigation bar to the left.
  • The COST of solar can range from $2 for a solar powered gadget like a yard light to $200 for a small DIY project to power some lights and odds and ends to $17,000 for a 2kw (2,000 watt) or $33,000 for a 4kw(4,000 watt) residential system.
  • However, you may be able to greatly reduce your solar power cost by taking advantage of many Federal and State government financial incentives. Click HERE

  • It is "possible" to completely go "off the grid" but not without altering your lifestyle ormaking a significant investment.... which is of course a personal matter of choice.
  • It is completely do-able to supplement and even almost eliminate your need for power from "the Grid".
  • electtric company workier reading meter

  • In a typical "Grid connected system" you use solar power during the day when the sun is shining and feed your "unused" power back to the grid and get credit for it.(Electric companies will give you credit on your electric bill for the power you fed back to them). Call YOUR electric company to find out details that are pertinent to your situation.

  • Solar Batteries 2

  • In order to use your system when the sun is NOT shining you must include a battery charging/backup system..... where the solar cells charge the batteries. Your solar energy power comes from the batteries when the sun is not out, or at night.
