A 5 Watt Solar Panel on
1969 Case CK 580 Back Hoe

Custom Search

tractor with 5W solar panel (DIY) On my 1969 Case Backhoe I attached a 5 watt solar panel with alligator clips and I really like the results. Since my backhoe can sit months on end without being needed, the battery of course, would be too drained to start the motor. It has been an annoying nuisance when I do need it.

I would try to remember to remove the battery and recharge it occasionally, but would usually end up forgetting to charge the battery. So on the day I'd need my backhoe, it wouldn't be ready. tractor battery with alligator clips

Now, by just hooking up this 5 watt solar panel with alligator clips onto the battery terminals, this baby is ready to go anytime I need it. This set-up is sold

as a set for about $50 unless on sale... and consists of the 5 watt amorphous solar panel & alligator clips. Click on Northern Tools link here for information on the panel, price and normally there is free shipping. In their search bar, type in 'solar panels'. The 5 watt panel should be on that first page. The backhoe can get about 3-6 hours of sun a day. And the solar panel will be hooked up the battery year round in all four seasons. That should show me the durability of the amorphous solar panel. It is a lot easier to just disconnect the alligator clips and set the panel aside and fire the hoe right up! Rather than turning the key and realizing I have a dead battery issue again.

I'm thinking about permanently mounting the solar panel so all I have to do is just disconnect the clips. Maybe even permanently wiring it tot he battery and doing the connect/disconnect through the simple flip of a toggle switch. I'll keep you posted.
